The STIG helps you discover 25 best photoshoot places in Tallinn
Hi, my name is STIG. I assume you have already heard about me. If not, I am a character from a world-famous car show Top Gear.
I drive cars. Fast cars to be precise. If being even more precise, the fastest cars in the world. Today I am in Tallinn. And I would like to invite you for a little ride. If you join me, I can guarantee you will discover some of the most Instagrammable places around the town. There is something for everyone.
Ready? Let's ride!
PS! During our trip together I promise you will learn a tip or two about how to make cool photos. Let it be my gift for you.
So what are you waiting for? Let's ride!
But first, please be warned: I will charge you if you attempt to remove my helmet. Okay?
Rotermanni Quarter
Okay, first stop → Rotermanni Quarter.
Rotermann City is a cozy and friendly urban environment characterized by the historical atmosphere, outstanding and tantalizing architecture, openness, uniqueness, and obviously the excellent location — right in the heart of the city.
There are lots of beautiful walls and cafeterias that you can easily take photos in. The whole quarter is quite small and you can easily go through the whole area in 20 minutes.
My favorite places in Rottermanni ->
RÖST (they have my favorite coffee GASTROL GSX) → tips for photos. Order a nice cardamon bun and a coffee, sit outside and feel like you are the most special person in the world. You just might be.
R14 Restaurant has a really decent interior → Grab a glass of wine and think that you are Madonna. That's how the best photos are made!
Chimney → there is a nice big chimney and a really decent area where you can take photos in the middle of the area with a great looking wall.
Metropol Spa Hotell → The building is made up of red bricks and is looking very majestic. A photo with the building when you are coming out of the hotel will make your friends feel kind of jealous. =)
Pro photography tip — if you ever ask random people to make photos of you, tell them to click the button at least 20+ times. Tell them that you are very selective and will select only one photo afterward. It's easy to take more photos but hard to ask for a new random people to take photo of you. Please let the stranger know that it was me who taught you this lesson.
Maakri Quarter
Maakri is the first highrise taller than 100 meters. The tallest building in the city. It has a very decent interior and a few secret places where even locals would not go, but you have the perfect opportunity.
Inside the building, there is a nice welcome lobby where you can just hang around and meet some friends, drink a coffee. The place looks magnificent. Definitely worth taking a nice photo there!
You don't have to go far away, just a few steps onto the right and you will find Björn Espresso bar, which allegedly offers the best coffee in the world. Not as good as my Castrol GSX though. Nevertheless, this place is really decent to take a photo for a gram and sit still for a little bit.
In front of the building, there is a beautiful wall where you can take some nice decent looking photos as well.
That's it here. 3 more photos and off we go!
Some people ask me who I am… well, I am here, guiding you across the town to take photos…
Some say under my helmet, is another smaller helmet and under that is another helmet and under that is a poster of Miley Cyrus. I am Miley Cyrus.
Freedom Square
Next stop Freedom Square. Again, this is a very well known place in Tallinn, but I am going to show you them from a different angle. I am sure you might not be aware of a few gems where you can take photos as you've only seen in movies.
Come and have a look at this alley. If you are lucky enough you might see it as a rainbow. Some say Stig can taste the rainbow. I know it's a little bit STIGish to cross the road straight from the freedom square as technically you are not allowed to do that, but since I once fired Donald Trump I have the rights to allow you ONLY and ONLY if you wear a helmet and there are no cars coming. Alternatively, if you don't have a helmet with you please use another route, there is a pedestrian crossing if you go straight forward.
Okay, here you can feel free to take as many photos you like because it's very likely that no one ever photobombs you. Ever. You can have a nice walk here, depending on a season it's always beautiful here.
Now to the monument to the War of Independence itself.
Here are a few examples of the photos I would personally take. And as you already know, I am Miley Cyrus and my photos get a lot of likes. So you know better whether it's a good idea to follow my tips. ;)
LEZ GO to OLD TOWN
It seems that even though you already know me for a little while, you still don't seem to know who I am.
Don't worry, it was me who trained Batman in the art of keeping a secret identity.
I will now show you probably the best places in Old Town where you can take a really nice photo of you or whoever you are traveling with.
This will require a little ride so hold tight and please don't touch my helmet!
Kiek In the Kök → here is my favorite.
Can you imagine people got to build those walls and never make a photo of them? It is actually sad!
Danish Garden → Here is a nice place to take a photo for your Gram.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral → here is how I would take a photo there.
That going downstairs from there → Okay pretend you don't know that someone is taking a photo of you. Also if there are people on your way or blocking you from taking a perfect photo, please ask them to leave immediately. The command is coming from the STIG.
Some say that I eat soup with a fork and my sweat tastes like gun powder. Tell them that and see how they will come out of your way.
Viewing platforms → perfect for the gram
Well, you guessed it! It’s time to visit the most visited tourist places in Tallinn. The views are going to be extraordinary gorgeous.
I generally do not want to take my guests to very popular places because generally they are smart enough to find them on their own, but I think it would be very unpolite to not lead you through Old Towns one of the most popular sights. Especially knowing that you would like to spend as much time with me as possible. Because I am the STIG, baby!
Pro photography tip: Lightning tip: you can tap your phone screen so that it will adjust the lightning. Simple stupid method for better quality photos!
Kohtuotsa →
Here we go with unforgettable views, regardless of the season. You’ll get great photos of the city’s red roofs, towers, Gulf of Finland, port and Pirita district. You can see both the Old town and the buildings in the new part of the city.
Please make sure to pose with “The times we had with The STIG”
If you’re shooting with an iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, or one of the XS models, you can use your Portrait mode in the Camera app to create a beautifully blurred background. To achieve this effect, open the Camera app, tap on Portrait, and frame your shot.
Patkuli viewing platform →
Patkuli viewing platform is located in one of the most ancient parts of the city. To get to the top there is a stairway of 157 steps connecting Toompea to the town below.
Rahukohtu 6 street just when you are heading into Patkuli platform. A decent place to take photos for sure. :) — Low level angle — best photos. =)
Kohtu 6 — This is a beautiful house that could be missed. I think you can make a decent photo with it. It reminds me of Amsterdam.
Alright, cowboys. Let’s move on
Let's go see some places INSIDE Old Town. I will make sure all these places are in one bucket so you don't have to walk a lot.
Let's start off with Must Puudel. It is a really cool retro cafe where you can take photos in a very unique environment. I suggest sitting by the window.
Savoy Boutique Hotel → this 5+ star hotel is one of a kind.
